Jack and the Beanstalk

We have been exploring a traditional tale, Jack and the Beanstalk.

We have been retelling the story throughout the week. Some of us really enjoyed role-playing the story, others enjoyed creating their own endings to the stories. Whilst role-playing outside the children climbed as high as they could to see who could be the tallest giant!

We all had a go at retelling the story and recording it by writing it down. Our challenge was to make our stories really interesting and we succeeded!

We also created illustrations to accompany the story using a variety of resources.

We spoke a lot about the beanstalk and how it grew up to the sky. This got us thinking about how tall it would have been and if we could measure it. We then began to think about our height and how we could measure ourselves. We also began measuring using different objects around the classroom using different strategies.
We wondered whether we might be taller or shorter than Jack. We agreed that we would all be shorter than the giant.
We even tried to create a life-sized Jack and Giant (although, we all agreed the giant would be a lot taller!)

We became very interested in how a bean grew into a giant beanstalk overnight. This got us thinking about how plants grow. So we decided to read another book which could tell us a little bit more. We chose Jasper's Beanstalk.
We learnt that you have to be very patient whilst waiting for a plant to grow. But if you care for your seed properly it will grow and grow and grow!
We planted our own beans so we could watch the changes as they happened.
None of our beans have reached up to the giants castle yet, but we're still waiting!
